north-london-hearing-squareexactIt was not until about 20 years ago that I acknowledged that I had a hearing problem that needed to be addressed.  Over this period I have been fitted with a very wide range of hearing aids, some of which were astronomically expensive, but none offered me a complete substitute for my natural hearing capability.  Although the volume of my hearing improved, I found that there were many environments in which I was unable to hear normally and background noise was a particular problem.

When I became aware of Lyric aids I was keen to explore the possibility of technological improvements.

I have been fitted with Lyric in both ears, at North London Hearing, and am both astonished and delighted with the quality of my hearing, which represents a quantum leap in the advancement of audio technology.

I can hear as well now as when I was a child and have discovered how I have been ‘missing out’ to a very considerate extent.  Quite apart from the perceived stigma of wearing visible hearing aids that some might consider an issue, for me a man in my seventies, my absolute priority is to be able to hear properly and to join in conversations rather than often opting out of them.

Lyric has literally changed my life in a very positive way.  My wife claims that even my speech is clearer and my temperament calmer than they were B.L. (before Lyric!)

Harley Street Hearing Clinical Director, Paul Checkley as guest speaker at University College London, Ear Institute for the Masterclass in Advanced Amplification and Rehabilitation. Other contributors included Mezzo Soprano, Janine Roebuck , Guardian entertainments editor, Nick Coleman and Professor Todd Ricketts from Vanderbilt University in Tenessee, USA

“Harley Street Hearing are committed to education and development in the field of audiology” says Paul “and this event provided the perfect opportunity to share some of our clinical experience and specialist knowledge in the field of music and hearing loss”

The day focussed on the specific needs of musicians with hearing loss and strategies to implement hearing protection programmes in the music and entertainment industry. Also on the agenda was the latest technology designed to improve the quality of amplified music and tips for clinical audiologists in the assessment and treatment of musicians.

michael portraitI remember it was a colleague at London Weekend Television who said to me, when I could no longer cope adequately with the multi sound sources during a live production, “You need hearing aids.  Good ones too”.  And she was right.

I started with one aid from the NHS but it wasn’t the revelation I hoped it would be; Over the years I’ve done most of the major brands.  I’ve even explored the High Street chains.  But I have come to the conclusion that you need a specialist (like a doctor or a surgeon) who knows your case history and who has an open mind about the product you need – and not just a tie-up with a particular supplier and that is when I found Harley Street Hearing.

I recently went for the personal recommendation of Paul Checkley, my specialist at Harley Street Hearing in London.  He unreservedly recommended – for my particular loss – a Phonak Audeo. During my ‘trial’ period, I was amazed by the ‘Zoom’ setting. I sat at one end of our dining table and it literally ‘zoomed’ into the guest at the other end (by-passing all the peripheral chatter in between) and brought her voice clearly into both aids. I would never have dreamed of hearing so well in this situation before.

Audeo actually, it means, “I dare” in Latin. And I do – dare to invest, dare to believe, dare to forget nostalgia and hope for a whole new future; a future in which first-time hearing becomes the expectation rather than the exception.
